Sitting Exams

A surprisingly high number of students lose marks through poor exam technique, rather than what they know. Do you think any of these suggestions might improve your performance?

• Don't get involved in negative talk outside the exam room. Talk positive with positive people. Stay away from people who will bring you down.
• Start off the exam by taking some time to settle down and look through the paper carefully.
• Start with the easiest question to settle you down, or get the hardest question out of the way first.
• Take care to read the questions right through.
• Be very careful to fully answer the question asked. While you may be able to tailor what you know to answer a given question, it’s important to resist the temptation to answer the question you hoped would be asked, or to write down everything you know that’s vaguely related to the question.
• Write a brief plan for longer answers, so that you stay on track.
• Underline key words in the questions.
• Share out your time effectively between questions, according to the number of marks they are worth. Remember that it’s almost always easier to get the first 50% of the marks for each question than to get the next 50%. This means it’s usually a bad idea to neglect one question in the hope that your marks on other questions will be so high that they pull your grade up.
• Leave some time at the end of the exam so that you can check your answers over. A little time spent checking can sometime save you quite a lot of marks.

GOOD LUCK!!

  3. That first point is something that really helps, I get so terribly anxious and jittery when exams that 'count' swing around. My body pretty much decides that it no longer needs food or sleep for a week or so before an assessment block starts and all throughout. Well, when you have really bad issues with nerves, and you've scarcely eaten or slept for a few days, being around the highly competitive students in our cohort is the worst thing ever. O_O...>.<"

  6. Aww! Take some anti-inflammatory analgesics like nurofen, a decent multivitamin and some vitamin c tablets, drink a LOT of water and try to sleep it off. Having the worst immune system of all time = learning how to get over being sick asap. Poor Amy! *hug* I hope you feel better soon. <3
