Do schools kill creativity?

  1. I agree with him completely. It has often saddened me that creativity has not been given the same value in society as academic success. Perhaps in a school as academic as our own, we do not feel it as keenly as in other schools, but the notion of the value of intellect still permeates the few “creative” subjects that we have been offered. A huge emphasis on theory has been included in creative subjects to give them an academic level. In textiles, for example, 75% of the mark is theory-based, whilst only a meagre percentage is based on the creativity of the design/s. We need more people like Ken Robinson running our education system.

  2. I totally agree Julianne, but it isn't just what he says - it's the lovely gentle way that he says it.

I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but in the new National Curriculum there is far less time allowed for the creative arts. This is a terrible shame.

I should be over the moon, because that time is going into teaching History - but I'm not because I can see a lot of sense, just like you, in what Ken Robinson has to say.
