What does it all mean???????

I am usually pretty good at interpreting historical photographs, but what is going on here??? WHY were these pictures taken? Who takes a picture of a small kid smoking with a chicken? Why wire up a piglet and get it drunk? Or are these things that most people do and I have just been missing out??

  1. I don't think you're missing out on a thing, unless we're both missing out on something...

    First:
    Q. What is the difference between an pilot and a pig?
    A. The pig doesn't turn into a pilot when it's drunk.

    Second:
What the...um, be a chicken and don't smoke? Like really out of place anti-smoking ads? I have no clue. That's just bizarre.

  3. so the story on the net about the first one is that the russians years back were doing experiments on animals, and that this is a pig they got drunk before they sent it into space to "relax it". obviously, one has to question the truth of this story. some sources suggest it is a scene from the mockumentary "First on the Moon".

the second one is apparently a portrait of henri groulx, taken in paris, circa 1920. along with another of him standing next to his rooster which is on a pedestal, it's part of the canadian archive of images etc. as for making sense, i think its just a picture of henri groulx with his pet chicken, smoking (as you do). i suppose they might not have known (or paid attention to) the effects of smoking at that point. maybe they thought it was cute? but probably it was, quite simply, a normal portrait, albeit with some strange (to our eyes) alterations
